CM Badal Chief Guest At World University’s First Convocation

Mar 26, 2016: Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib held its first convocation here today. Chief Minister of the state, Sardar Parkash Singh Badal was the chief guest on the occasion while Chancellor of the University and S.G.P.C President Jathedar Avtar Singh presided over the conference. Former Army Chief and Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff committee General Bikram Singh delivered the convocation address.

University Grants Commission Secretary Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu was the guest of honour on the occasion. While addressing the gathering of students and academicians, Chief Minister S. Parkash Singh Badal said the students of this University to should make a commitment today that will work for the betterment of the state and of the nation as well. The Chief Minister addressed the students as the future of our nation and said that we all should strive harder to leave our mark on the world stage. Sardar Badal motivated the students by sharing anecdotes from his personal life and said that each and every one of the students present in the convocation can achieve greater heights if they do their work with sheer

dedication and hard work. The Chief Minister congratulated the University and hoped that the Varsity will continue its march towards excellence in the future as well and will be able to provide the state and the nation with good and able citizens. Presiding over the Convocation, Jathedar Avtar Singh congratulated the students over their academic achievement and said the students passing out of this institution will bring glory and honour not only to themselves but to the University as well. The Chancellor wished the students for their bright future.

Giving information about the Convocation, Vice chancellor the University, Dr Gurmohan Singh said it is a matter of great pride and honour for the University that the Chief Minster handed out the degrees to students in its first convocation. The Vice Chancellor told that in total 478 students received their degrees and 10 students were honoured with University medals. The University also conferred honorary Doctorate of Science to General Bikram Singh and an honorary Doctorate of Literature was conferred to former IFS officer S. Bhagwant Singh Dalawari.

Delivering the convocation address, Former chief of Army General Bikram Singh said that for the students it is a beginning of a new era and a journey. He said that the students should feel lucky that they got an opportunity to study in such an institution which is primed for excellence. The Former Chief of Army thanked the University for the honour bestowed upon him and hoped that his relation with the University for years to come. UGC Secretary Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

While praising the University, he said that a hallmark of a great University is its academic resources, infrastructure and the advancements made in the field of research. He said that looking at the University, he feels confident that not only the Varsity has all these qualities but also it has the potential to become one the premier higher education institutions of the nation. The Secretary said that the University is not only excelling in the field of academics and research but the Varsity is leaving its mark in the field of sports as well at the national and international level.
